‘Cove’ Cynan Jones
Makes Elizabeth Strout look garrulous. Poetic thriller about being stranded, so close to help but alone. Read it in one sitting if possible. Possibly the only book written by a man that I’ve read this year.
‘Run Like a Girl’, Mina Samuel
Encouraging and definitely not your PE teacher of the ’90s. A bit repetitive but did encourage me for a run twice as long as I ever thought possible.
‘Eileen’, Ottessa Moshfegh
Impulse buy. Couldn’t put it down. Then, 3/4 way through, realised it’s bafflingly silly. Unbelievable motivations. Finished it out of curiosity and put on charity pile.
‘A Book for Her (& him if he can read)’ Bridget Christie
I LOVE BRIDGET CHRISTIE
‘The Outrun’ Amy Liptrot
Another impulse purchase. The rhythm of this book was hypnotic and the narrative of London and feeling spat out was so tenderly expressed. Real empathy for herself and her family.
‘Down in the City’ Elizabeth Harrower
Her first and the second I’ve read. Intricate, carefully written and lots of spaces for you to fill in the gaps. Masterpiece.
